Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
